Vianet Apologizes for Service Disruption Following Fire at Data Center

Kathmandu : Vianet would like to sincerely apologize to our valued customers for the disruption in Internet and viaTV services caused by an unforeseen emergency.

On September 9 at around 4:45 PM, a fire during the protest severely damaged the building that houses one of our primary data centers on the 4th floor of Central Business Park (the same building as Kantipur Media Group). While we operate backup data centers, the sudden loss of such critical infrastructure overwhelmed capacity, causing widespread service interruptions.

Our technical team was immediately mobilized, but due to unsafe conditions, they could not enter the building right away. Instead, they worked tirelessly to restore partial Internet access using our backup sites. viaTV services could not be restored at that time, as our first priority was to bring Internet services back online.

On the morning of September 10, after the Army and Police bravely controlled multiple fires, our engineers gained access to the data center at around 12 noon. Entering a partially burning building filled with smoke and shattered glass, they risked their safety to carefully remove critical servers and relocate them to another secure data center.

Thanks to their extraordinary effort, Internet services for most of our customers have already been restored, and we are on track to reach full service capacity by the end of today. viaTV restoration will follow as we stabilize the network further.

We understand how much our customers rely on us, especially in difficult times. This extraordinary event has reinforced our determination to make our network even more resilient for the future.

We thank all our customers for their patience, trust, and understanding as we continue working through this crisis.
